Scope and Contents
The foundation documents, dating from the 1600s, include: a brief history of Antwerp Carmel, sent from Darlington Carmel in 1863; copies of indulgences given by Popes Paul V and Pius VI; correspondence of the pre-1790 period; statistics of the personnel of these early continental Carmels; financial records dating back to the 1760s; aspects of the spiritual life of the community, including songs, poems, commemorative events, spiritual direction and retreat exercises, and descriptions of miraculous events. Noteworthy are the materials reflecting the spiritual contribution made by their chaplains, especially the Reverend H. Joris, and the Jesuit, Edward Baptist Newton.
