Scope and Contents

Fenwick thanks S.Stanislaus for stockings.."prettiest and finest that were ever seen in Yankee land" and "deemed so by Yankee judges, too." And also "sweetest grapes" from Reverend Mother. Mentions trip to Canada; ...with Bishop Janson (?) who came to Burlington, Vt. for dedication of new church. Stations in Canada are planted(?); 5 Bishops, plus us two, 57 priests, 1 Jesuit (his brother George), 25,000 persons present. Janson preached in French. Speaks of Orphans Fair, hopes to receive $3,000; S. Ann Alexius is gone. Mentions school...Carmel will "be the toast yet" Thrilled about new chapel. In 6/23/1843, from College of Holy Cross, speaks of laying cornerstone of college...5000 present; procession for 3/4 mile; 400 children...Bear in mind, 15 years ago...not a single Catholic in Worcester, now more than 2,000. cf. Hughes, his college, its problems.
