Series 10: Mathieu Herard Papers, CSSp, 1829-1839
Scope and Contents
This series consists of miscellaneous papers of Mathieu Herard, the second Holy Ghost (Spiritan) priest to labor in the United States. First working in Pittsburgh as chaplain to the Poor Clares, in New York to assist victims of the cholera epidemic, and in Madison, New Jersey, Herard eventually moved to Baltimore where he became a close and devoted friend, chaplain, and major benefactor of the Carmelites there. Especially due to his fund- raising efforts, it became possible for the sisters to build a chapel for their monastery on Aisquith Street. After Herard's death in France in 1839, they inherited a large sum of money from his estate.
