Scope and Contents
Correspondence, including death notices and poetry of Baptist Pendrell, Chichester, some supplying biographical and historical detail of American founders. 12/29/1876, mentions that 20 yrs before, the last sister who remembered Mother Bernardina Matthews and nieces died (at 90). States "she often spoke of dear Mother Bernardina..." They are convinced that Mother Baptist Pendrell who was prioress over 43 years, was a saint. Comments; 1887, "spirit of our ancients who always avoided anything public and thought Carmelites ought to be buried with our Lord." Sister Mary Bernard, for whom the Holy Innocent's song was made, died in France, 1832 (written by Charles Plowden, who was a friend--not confessor.) 1882, "great many postulants, but it is so rare to get a good spirit, instead of coming to be learners as the word novice imports, they seem to be teachers, our derest Mother is pretty quick in finding this out and would rather be without than not have good ones."
