Corres: re: The Pious Guide to Laurence Kelly, ca 1936
Scope and Contents
Correspondence relating information re: The Pious Guide. From Mo Seraphim: a note saying it was the first prayer book printed in the US, it was bound and printed at Mount Carmel, and it was attributed to Mother Clare Joseph. From J. William Eckenrode, Newman Book Shop: no new information to offer, "but I always thought that this was a manuscript prayer book, not printed; but I must be mistaken." From William R. Stearns, SJ,: he located four editions of "The pious guide to prayer and devotion containing various practices of piety calculated to answer the various demands of the different devout members of the Roman Catholic Church," dated 1792, printed by James Doyle. A note by Kelly is appended to this letter: The rector of Woodstock presented the Restorers with a copy of the 1792 edition and a copy of Carmel in America.
