Series 5: Correspondence of Founders
Scope and Contents
This series consists of the letters received or written by the four founders between the years 1791 and 1831. Included among the letters are a few exchanged between the Chichester (formally Hoogstraet) and Lanherne (formally Antwerp) nuns with whom they had once lived. Most discuss spiritual matters but do reveal the curiosity and interest of the English nuns about the American foundation. There are also several letters written by Mother Clare Joseph to the first bishop of Baltimore, John Carroll, and others received from Bishops Carroll, Ambrose Marechal (Baltimore), Simon Brute (written before he became Bishop of Vincennes), and Benedict Flaget (Bardstown). Still others show the close relationship that existed from the start with both the Jesuit community as well as the Visitation community in "George Town." Prayer covenants established between both the Sulpicians and the Visitations nuns with the Port Tobacco community are part of this series.
